Iceland Travel | Things to Know

Without a doubt, Iceland has become a top ten bucket list destination for so many people, and I can see why. Iceland has a lot to offer in terms of natural beauty and untouched nature. It’s no wonder why tourists flock here year round from all over the world. So here I am to answer some questions about traveling to the land of fire and ice.

Is it expensive?

If we’re being completely honest here, yes, Iceland travel can be quite expensive. From sleeping accommodations, gas, grocery shopping, and dining out. Everything adds up quickly in Iceland compared to back home. I strongly advise that you budget yourself wisely and decide which activities you’d like to spend your time and money doing. If you’re considering buying some alcoholic beverages, then it’s best to do so at the duty free store in Keflavik airport when you land. It’s cheaper than going to the liquor stores in the city. Going to Sky Lagoon, Blue Lagoon, or even into a glacier, will be pretty pricey. Being aware of some of the activities you’ll be doing from early on, will definitely help with knowing how to budget yourself.

Should I Rent a Car?

Absolutely. I actually recommend a mini camper van. They allow you to properly travel the country, enjoy the scenery Iceland has to offer, and cut back on the amount you’d spend by staying in a hotel or airbnb. If you aren’t into camper vans, then yes, rent a car. Unless you’re staying with a local who is willing to give you their car or drive you around the entire time, I highly suggest renting a car for the entire duration of your Iceland trip. It allows you to be more flexible with your time and enjoy your favorite sights more. Renting a vehicle is possible to do both online and at Keflavik airport. I’d rent online so that seeing all the options are clear and l can take my time deciding which rates seem more appealing.

Hotel or AirBnB

While the hotels are all really unique and nice in their own ways, airbnb’s are more affordable and come with a backstory. While traveling in the Vestfjords of Iceland, I got to stay in some of the most intriguing places. No place was quite like the other and they all offered magical, growing experiences. I was traveling with a group of friends who were all Icelandic. They also thought Airbnb’s were the best option and we were lucky to stay in some swanky, neat places that hold a lot of history and backstories.

Pro Tips:

  • All the natural sight seeing places in Iceland are free! Waterfalls, geysers, mountains, black sand beaches, and canyons. Some places you may have to pay a small fee for parking, but it’s all good and worth it.

  • Icelandic currency (ISK) is called Krona (kr). 10 USD = 1236.60 ISK. If you own a Visa or Master Card with a chip, you’ll be fine getting by in Iceland.

  • Buying alcohol for your trip in Iceland is cheaper to do at Keflavik Airport.
